ALEX GUNNARSSON
SET & COSTUME DESIGNER

Alex is a multidisciplinary designer, artist, and visual storyteller, specialising in all forms of theatre and opera.
Alex’s practice is rooted in the quiet power of costume, set, and visual design to communicate character, emotion, and narrative. He believes in design’s ability to transform stories. For Alex, both costume and set are not just physical elements, but vital extensions of character and story, fostering silent dialogue between performer and audience.
He trained at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, where he graduated with First Class Honours in 2018. He is also a visiting lecturer for the Theatre Practice courses there working with the next generation of designers. Over the years, Alex has collaborated with some of the most respected directors and designers in the industry, including Antony McDonald, Richard Jones, Tamara Rojo, Terry Gilliam, Stewart Laing, Robert Styles, Ian Wooldridge, Sarah Beaton, John McFarlane, Michael Levine, Robert Jones, Merle Hensel, Ben Stones, Jon Morrell, and many others.
His work has graced some of the UK's most prestigious institutions, including the Royal Court Theatre, Royal Opera House, The Old Vic Theatre, Theatre Royal Bath, and the English National Ballet.

His expertise and vision have played key roles in award-winning productions, including Katya Kabanova and Alcina (both at the Royal Opera House), which won Olivier Awards for Best New Opera Production.
